"More Important Than Him"

On Sunday morning, a group of some 50 Christians protested against Calvary Church over some saga that has plagued the church for some two years now. It brought sadness to my heart and I was upset with the fact that Christians would resort to such actions. I felt they had victimized the church knowing that the church would not retaliate. To me, it’s just being a big bully.

I preached on Sunday morning that UNITY is not something you can strife for. Rather, it is a by-product, a result of something we do, and that something is HUMILITY. Where there is humility, there will be unity.

Most of us have a distorted view as to what humility is. Rick Warren explained; “Humility is not thinking less of yourself; It is thinking of yourself less.” Humility is not thinking poorly of yourself, or putting yourself down jokingly or otherwise. That’s false humility. Humility is to consider others more important than yourself. To be concerned with other people’s interests is to be humble. And where there is humility, there is unity. In any church split, or leadership conflict, pride is usually always the core issue.

What amazes me most is the fact that Jesus emptied himself so that we can have an intimate relationship with God. Jesus was equal with God. He is in fact, God. By choice, He chose to become a bond slave. By choice the Almighty God chose to be dependent on man, born an infant. By choice, the Alpha and Omega chose to obey his earthly parents. By choice, the Creator of the heavens and earth chose to be trampled upon by man. By choice, the awesome God of the universe chose to die on a cross. And for what? For the fact that HE THINKS OF US AS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HIMSELF. That my dear friends, is HUMILITY in its truest sense.

Are we willing to take the path of humility? Or do we choose selfish ambition and empty conceit? Throughout the Bible, God warned us that He “opposed the proud and exalt the humble.” If you choose self-interest above humility, it is not the devil and his demons you have to worry about. It is God for God Himself will oppose the proud.
Disunity in the church? In the home? In the Office? In your marriage? Try the path of humility. I promise you, God will walk with you. In choosing the path of humility, God exalted Jesus once again to His equal and He gave Him a name which is above all names, and in this name, every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, whether in heaven, on earth or under the earth. There is no other name exalted like the name of Jesus Christ. He chose to be a servant of all because He reckons us as more important than himself. And now He is exalted to be over all.
